Duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:
-Operational responsibility for the firearms initiative program. -Ensure Veterans Health Administration law enforcement policies are properly implemented at all campuses. -Provide direction of force, control, assistance or coordination required during emergency situations. -Responds to reports of bomb threats, robbery, assault, serious disturbances and crimes. -Direct crime scene assessments. -Inspect work in progress to maintain the integrity and security of the facility. -Recommend personnel actions. -Plan and delegate work assignments of staff. -Approve and/or disapprove all types of leave requests ensuring continuous security coverage. -Ensure that supervisory personnel and non-supervisory personnel receive training at federal, state and local levels. -Review serious disciplinary cases. -Review and/or approve evaluations prepared by supervisors. -Apply advanced police management skills in the development and planning of crime prevention practices and policies. -Ensure officers receive high quality and comprehensive training. -Interpret departmental security guidelines. -Apply advanced knowledge of federal, state and local laws in arresting procedures, search and seizure, crime scene assessments, evidence seizure, crime classification, testifying in a court of law and any other aspect of law enforcement. -Coordinate program efforts with internal personnel as well as external personnel. -Represent an organization in an unstructured crisis management setting. You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-11 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is defined as experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Your experience must be clearly documented on your resume. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. LAUTENBERG AMENDEMENT:
This position authorizes the incumbent to carry a firearm. Any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition (Title 18, U.S.C., Section 922(g)(91)). Candidates who have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are not qualified for this position. Candidates under consideration will be required to certify whether they have ever been convicted of such an offense. False or fraudulent information provided by candidates is criminally punishable by fine or imprisonment (Title 18, U.S.C., Section 1001). ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR POLICE OFFICER POSITION:
1. Applicants must possess a current, valid State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely. 2. VA Police Officers must be able to achieve and maintain mandatory firearm qualification/certification. 3. New VA Police Officers are required to attend and successfully pass an 10-week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas within 90 days of entry on duty. 4. A character investigation may be conducted on applicants selected for employment. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government. 5. A medical examination is required. The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants:
good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice. 6. Applicants and employees must have the capacity to perform the essential functions of the position without risk to themselves or others. Applicants and employees must possess emotional and mental stability. A psychological examination is required. In most instances, a specific medical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify an applicant or employee. A medical condition or impairment is disqualifying only if the condition, for good medical reason, precludes assignment to or warrants restriction from the duties of the specific position. IMPORTANT NOTES:
(1) As a condition of employment, must qualify to be issued a firearm and semi-annually with assigned firearm, annually with an expandable Straight Baton (MEB), maintain a valid State or Commonwealth Driver's License and pass annual physical and Psychological assessment. The incumbent must undergo and pass an annual physical for Police Officers in accordance with VA Directive and Handbook 0730. Since the duties of this position are exacting and responsible, and involve activities under trying circumstances, the incumbent must possess emotional and mental stability. He/she is confronted daily with physical demands, such as responding to emergency situations. This includes moderate to arduous physical exertion; the ability to run, climb multiple stairs, lifting disabled or injured individuals, crawling, crouching and standing for long periods of rime. The incumbent, on a reoccurring basis is required to use his/her physical ability to restrain violent person(s) using unarmed defensive tactics. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
