Ophthalmology Technician

full-service medical office, regional specialty referral hubs, urgent care centers and strategic hospital affiliations across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Long Island.
The Ophthalmic Technician will assist the physician with daily patient care, communication, and workflow. Specifics tasks include but are not limited to taking patient histories, administering tests, scribing, and performing a variety of clinical and patient services.
Responsibilities:
Obtains patient history and charts procedures in the electronic medical records.
Performs and records visual acuities, color vision, stereopsis test, auto refractometer readings, blood pressure as directed by ophthalmologist.
Orders new/replacement lenses based on prescription.
Handles patient questions during visits and via phone, providing advice and resolving problems in consultation with ophthalmologist.
Maintains, calibrates, cleans, and sterilizes ophthalmic instruments and equipment as indicated.
Assists physicians in performing in-office ophthalmic procedures.
Transcribes physician's dictation into patient electronic medical record, as directed by the physician, according to local, state and federal guidelines.
Monitors inventory of supplies and restocks as necessary.
Ensures medication and treatment items are not expired.
Educates patients on ocular conditions and ocular care.
Performs other job-related duties as required.
Qualifications:
Required:
High School Diploma or GED
One to two years' experience in an eye care environment
Prior experience with ophthalmic testing and scribing
Excellent interpersonal skills, customer service, organization ability, time management and the ability to effectively prioritize work
Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks with strong attention to detail and documentation
Proficiency with computer use, especially an electronic medical record
Knowledge of medical terminology, particularly related to ophthalmology
Current Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) certification as COA, COT, or CMOT. (Required within 12 months of hire)
Preferred:
Formal ophthalmic training
Some college coursework, preferably including basic anatomy and medical terminology courses
Prior experience in a fast-paced, high customer volume work environment
