Qualifications:
Experience with graphic design, website/social media, and direct mail preferred.
Experience with public policy and or advocacy preferred Organized, reliable, adaptable, and able to effectively manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Position requires excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to relate to persons with a variety of cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
Proficiency with website administration, social media (Facebook, YouTube), broadcast email services (MailChimp or similar), and online database software (Boomerang or similar) preferred.
Experience using graphic/web design applications - particularly Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat Pro, and WordPress) - is a plus.
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated.
Advanced research skills; familiarity with various internet research tools.
Strong analytical skills; familiarity with data tracking and performance management.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, performance-driven environment.
The ability to responsibly manage confidential and/or sensitive information.
Position requires a high degree of professionalism in representing BCHS in significant contacts with major donors, board members, and stakeholders.
A commitment to the mission and values of BCHS.
Bachelor's Degree or a minimum of 1-2 years of experience working in a nonprofit development office preferred.
ORGANIZATIONAL Overview:
Brooklyn Community Housing and Services (BCHS) is committed to ending homelessness in Brooklyn.
Each year, we provide safe and clean supportive housing for more than 1,200 formerly homeless women, children, and men.
We help them learn how to live productively and independently, with dignity and hope.
BCHS employs 120 people and has a total revenue of $12 million.
Our programs provide short-term, transitional, and permanent housing, homelessness prevention, personalized case management, mental health care, on-site nursing, vocational training, substance abuse counseling, recreational activities, and other vital services.
Founded in 1978, BCHS has received awards such as the Fannie Mae Foundation's Maxwell Award for excellence in low-income housing development, as well as top ratings from the New York City Department of Homeless Services for the Arbor Inn program (mothers and children) and from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for Oak Hall (adults with chronic mental illness).
BCHS is seeking a Communications and Policy Associate who will support the work of the Development & Communications Department.
Reporting to the CDO, the Communications and Policy Associate job duties will focus primarily on executing policy strategy for the organization and management of communications/marketing materials.
POSITION Overview:
The Communications & Policy Associate reports to the Chief Development Officer (CDO) and will be responsible for providing communications and policy support to a busy and high-energy Development and Communications Department.
The Communications & Policy Associate will support the development and execution of a comprehensive communications and policy strategy.
The incumbent will have an important role in agency communications and policy activities by supporting all advocacy campaigns, and marketing efforts including newsletters, website, email services, social media, and media relations.
The Communications & Policy Associate interacts with supervisors, Board Members, clients, elected officials, business associates, vendors, and volunteers, and must project a professional appearance and demeanor during all work-related activities and communications.
This position requires some travel for deliveries and pick-ups within Brooklyn and Manhattan, as well as occasional heavy lifting.
Responsibilities:
Marketing Work with the Development Team to create and maintain a calendar of marketing/fundraising activities.
Support maintenance of BCHS's website, and social media platforms and work with the BCHS staff and clients to provide engaging content.
Maintain the agency's website (www.
bchands.
org) third-party giving vehicles, and online profiles (Facebook, YouTube, GuideStar, Greatnonprofits, etc.
).
Develop and coordinate the mailings, such as annual appeals, annual reports, and newsletters in collaboration with CDO Take digital photographs of resident and volunteer activities at the agency's three primary sites in Brooklyn - Brooklyn Gardens (Fort Greene), Navy Green (Wallabout) and 25 Chapel Street (Downtown Brooklyn), for use on the BCHS website, social media profiles, newsletters, etc.
Policy Strategy:
Collaborate with the CDO to develop and implement comprehensive policy strategies aligned with BCHS's goals and objectives.
Create compelling content for various advocacy channels, including social media, website, newsletters, and press releases.
Coordinate the production of advocacy materials, such as policy briefs, fact sheets, and reports, ensuring accurate and impactful messaging.
Monitor and analyze legislative and policy developments at the local, state, and federal levels related to affordable housing, homelessness, and community development.
Policy Analysis and Research:
Stay updated on relevant policy issues, legislation, and regulations affecting affordable housing, homelessness, and community development.
Conduct research and gather data to support evidence-based policy efforts.
Prepare policy briefs, fact sheets, and reports to communicate BCHS's positions and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
Assist in organizing and participating in advocacy-related meetings, events, and coalitions.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Provide support and research to CDO related to maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including government officials, community leaders, partner organizations, and residents.
Collaborate with BCHS staff to collect and share stories, testimonials, and case studies that highlight the impact of BCHS's policy work.
Support the planning and execution of community engagement events, workshops, and public forums centered around policy issues.
Provide timely and responsive communication to inquiries and requests from stakeholders.
