CO Adaptive Architecture is celebrating their 11-year anniversary, and is embarking on their third & fourth projects as an Architect Led Design Build, with the aim of ensuring that what is carefully and thoughtfully designed, is constructed precisely as intended.
Passionate about retrofitting our existing building stock for energy efficiency and resiliency using the Passive House design methodology, we pay as much attention to the embodied energy and health of the materials used in our designs as we do to ensuring the functionality and durability of the buildings we work on remain for decades to come.
In hiring for this position at CO Adaptive Building, we are looking for an individual who has 3
years experience with townhouse construction, with some rough carpentry and general construction experience.
The ideal candidate will be organized, enthusiastic in taking agency in organizing the job site and assisting the lead carpenter/ foreperson, will have a sense of urgency with an eye on efficiency, and will have a desire to learn new ways to approach solutions in construction.
Responsibilities:
We are looking for a self-motivated and team-focused General Laborer / Assistant Carpenter.
This person will interface with subcontractors and the lead carpenter.
This person must be able to assist a carpenter with securing materials in place, maintaining a clean working environment, assisting with loading and unloading from deliveries.
General gap filling between tasks that are needed.
This person needs to be able to look out for potential hazards, and ensure that work is completed according to the drawings, specification, and schedule.
The ideal candidate would have experience with Passive House construction (although we are willing to train for these skills) and will need to be able to perform the following duties at a minimum:
lift a least 40-50 pounds, separate waste by material, delicately remove moldings and trim from buildings for reuse, and have a valid drivers license.
OSHA 10 or 30 training is preferred with a SST card.
Being that this position is for an integrated role of General Laborer / Assistant Carpenter, this individual will need to fill in for any gaps where subcontractors are not engaged, as well as carpentry and passive house-specific tasks.
They will also need to be responsible for keeping the job site meticulously organized and clean.
These tasks would include picking up and accepting deliveries, checking for and documenting any damage, and securely storing and organizing materials.
We are also actively working to re-tool the construction waste stream and have found several partners who will use specific demolition materials and construction scraps/ off-cuts.
The General Laborer / Assistant Carpenter would work closely with the design team to work out concepts for designing for deconstruction and ease of maintenance for more circular building construction, acting as a feedback loop on how we can reduce and solve issues that make traditional construction more ineffective.
This person will be responsible for 3-4 residential renovation projects, pivoting to different projects as needed.
General Laborer / Assistant Carpenters will have to perform direct work.
The ability to understand architectural and engineering drawings is encouraged but not required, as is the ability to critically question the means and methods to achieve the desired goals of the design.
The job of the General Laborer / Assistant Carpenter shall be to effectively assist in executing high-quality carpentry with attention to collectively monitoring subcontractor's attention to waste and the membranes used in Passive House projects.
The ideal candidate will be keen on brainstorming new protocols with the design team for best practices and is able to multitask in order to coordinate the on-site logistics.
This candidate must speak English proficiently, with a second language as a plus.
